Functional medicine looks at underlying root causes to disease and takes on a person centred approach as opposed to a disease centred approach. It looks at the whole person not just the symptoms that they have. Chronic illnesses don’t just happen overnight, they take time to develop and often involve a complex array of contributing factors for them to emerge. Life events, family history, diet, lifestyle, work and our environment all add together and impact on our health. Traditional medicine doesn’t take all of these into consideration and often concentrates on symptom relief rather than finding the root cause and removing it to allow the body to heal more naturally.
By applying functional medicine and using its principles to give nutrition advice, a more thorough plan can be developed that addresses all aspects of a persons life giving a comprehensive programme of intervention. It gives advice not just on dietary change but also on improving sleep, exercise, work/life balance and stress reduction.
The Food Physio’s questionnaires are based on The Institute of Functional Medicines principles. They take an in-depth review of your full health history from birth to the current day. Our bodies are a complex interaction of many different systems so when someone has a problem it can be multiple system dysfunction that can contribute to that one problem so all systems need investigation. Medication past and present, illnesses, food intake and life stresses are all investigated.
